Out of the three guidebooks I read about Kauai this was by far the best！ The level of detail and understanding of the culture make The Ultimate Kaui Guidebook stand out above the Fodor's Travel （second best） and Lonely Planet （number three in my ranking）。 It's most likely because the author actually LIVES on the island。 So cool！ Out of the three guidebooks I read about Kauai this was by far the best！ The level of detail and understanding of the culture make The Ultimate Kaui Guidebook stand out above the Fodor's Travel （second best） and Lonely Planet （number three in my ranking）。 It's most likely because the author actually LIVES on the island。 So cool！ 。。。more

We just got back from Kauai。 We used this book to help plan our trip， then while we were on the island。I found it useful as a planning tool， however， once we got to Kauai it was mostly used because the maps are awesome （I love that they include the mile markers， that is so helpful）。 What isn't helpful is all the different sections， I had to have at least 3 bookmarks in place whenever we set out， one for the location description in general， one of the beaches we'd see when we got there， and one o We just got back from Kauai。 We used this book to help plan our trip， then while we were on the island。I found it useful as a planning tool， however， once we got to Kauai it was mostly used because the maps are awesome （I love that they include the mile markers， that is so helpful）。 What isn't helpful is all the different sections， I had to have at least 3 bookmarks in place whenever we set out， one for the location description in general， one of the beaches we'd see when we got there， and one of the hiking section。 That became cumbersome and I found myself using the book mostly for the maps， and relying on other books for activities and descriptions。Also， the book also isn't meant for people who want to do lower key things， for example it didn't mention the Mahaulepu Heritage Trail at all。 Also， the author clearly isn't into gardens or birds， so his descriptions of these types of activities is lacking。 。。。more

My colleague lent me the version 5 and I read it in the flight。 The AirbNB had the version 11 so I just quickly updated myself on the differences。 Used the guide for our entire trip， it gies a good idea on what to do， help to make choices between vendors， give ideas。 Everyone recommended it too。 Great guide！

Very well written and helpful guidebook - I would have given it five stars， but a lot of the information is outdated （especially since the pandemic had a huge impact on existing businesses）， and buying the book doesn’t give you free access to the up to date information in the app。 I didn’t buy the subscription to the app， but in retrospect， I would have done that instead of buying the book。

I have read a lot of Guide books in Kauai because I just love the island。 This is by far the best one I’ve ever encountered。 Detailed but also direct， the author has achieved that fantastic balance of giving enough information to peak your interest but not spoiling your own experience。 Looking forward to reading more in the series。

Excellent guide book， especially if you are interested in hiking and adventures。 Many of the restaurant suggestions/reviews were spot on。

4。5 stars。 This is the best guidebook for Kauai according to some ratings。 I looked at 2 different ones and this was superior to the lonely planet copy， IMO。 The book details a selection of words that can be pronounced for practice。 Safety precautions。 Decent but not thorough trail maps （they have a separate app you can pay for features to have GPS'd trails though）。 The road maps were helpful and they were marked with mile markers to guide you。 Most descriptions included landmarks and mile marke 4。5 stars。 This is the best guidebook for Kauai according to some ratings。 I looked at 2 different ones and this was superior to the lonely planet copy， IMO。 The book details a selection of words that can be pronounced for practice。 Safety precautions。 Decent but not thorough trail maps （they have a separate app you can pay for features to have GPS'd trails though）。 The road maps were helpful and they were marked with mile markers to guide you。 Most descriptions included landmarks and mile markers to guide the reader to the correct spot。 Every restaurant on the island is not in here but there is a helpful restaurant section。 The activities included a full array of offerings and had useful comparisons from cruises to kayaking and helicopters。 Unique features were explained by north， east， south， and west portions of the island， as were beaches。 There was also a section labelled adventures that could also be renamed cool ways to die。 I'm not a complete chicken but those activities appeared consistently extreme。 It has something for everyone。 I checked this copy out from my local library。 I found having a paper copy extremely useful。 。。。more

I’ve read a few guidebooks now on Hawaii and so far this line of books is my favorite。 It tells you everything there is to do and see， where to stay and where to eat。 And it tells you honestly。 It’s like hearing from a good friend who lives on the island what you should do and how to do it。 The author lives there and moved there from the mainland。 It’s a pretty great read。 You really don’t need to have any other knowledge of the island before reading this book but I think it’s helpful to have so I’ve read a few guidebooks now on Hawaii and so far this line of books is my favorite。 It tells you everything there is to do and see， where to stay and where to eat。 And it tells you honestly。 It’s like hearing from a good friend who lives on the island what you should do and how to do it。 The author lives there and moved there from the mainland。 It’s a pretty great read。 You really don’t need to have any other knowledge of the island before reading this book but I think it’s helpful to have some general knowledge of the island and what sorts of things there is to do there。 。。。more
